Today, I want to talk about two important steps for successful decluttering. As part of my ongoing theme on decluttering, I’ve developed a comprehensive seven-step process for achieving decluttering success. In this post, I’ll be sharing two of those steps.

Firstly, you need to decide where to start. It could be a specific room, a closet, an end table, a drawer, or even just a corner of a room. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and unsure about where to begin, I have a strategy I call “The Happy Factor Method.”

Instead of focusing on what you should do or what you know needs to be done, think about what would make you the most happy to accomplish. By starting with something that brings you joy, you’ll build momentum and motivation to tackle the rest.

The second step is to establish your “WHY.” Decluttering is not always a quick task; it may take days or even weeks to complete. In those moments when you feel like giving up, have a compelling reason why you want to achieve your decluttering goals. This will keep you going. Take some time to reflect on the emotions associated with the area you want to declutter. How does it make you feel now? Guilty? Overwhelmed? Write these emotions down. Then, envision how you will feel once it’s all done. Create a little paragraph or daydream about the positive emotions and sense of accomplishment you’ll experience when the task is complete.

Remember, we often excel at starting projects but struggle with finishing them. By having a strong “why” to guide you, you’ll be more likely to follow through and reach the finish line.

In the next few videos, I’ll share the remaining five steps of my decluttering process. So stay tuned for more hacks to help you succeed at decluttering your home!
